Can't combine VxD's into Monolithic files
I am running W98se.
At start-up I am receiving the message: "Windows cannot combine VxD's into monolithic files before restarting...press any key to continue' I receive this message twice before Windows finally starts. I have been to the MS resourse pages and apparently when windows 98SE was reinstalled it used newer VXD files are not supported by SE. Option 1: Uninstall W98se and reinstall and not select updating to newer VXD files. I uninstalled W98se but when I reinstalled I was not given the option to use the keep the older versions. OPtion 2: Reinstall the OEM Service Release 2.1 or 2.5. I don't know where to find OEM Service Release 2.1 or 2.5. Or how to reinstall this. I had a new motherboard and processor installed about three months ago and the tech that did this installed my software for me. So I don't know if W98se was installed after W98 full version or just W98se alone. In system properties it says W98se, after I uninstalled W98se, so I assume it was a full install using just W989se. It has worked fine until yesterday when I started getting this message. Is there a simpler way to correct this problem as I am far from an expert on this. Thanks very much for any suggestion! Did this system used to have Win95?
Try re-installing Win98 "over-the-top" (either method should do - there are two in thread to which this link points). You can reinstall over-the-top if you have either the Win98se CD or the Win98se .cab files on your hard drive [often in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs] http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846 Did you change anything concerning a USB device just before you saw this error? . . . No, this one came with W98 installed, had it over five years. The motherboard went out and I had a new MB and processor etc. installed a few months ago, he also took my W98 cd but decided to install his SE cd on it so I could change display properties in order to use my webcam.
All was well until now. I did have a webcam installed and just the other day uninstalled that and installed a digital camera. System properties shows no signs or conflicts or problems. Could the cd for the digital camera have installed newer drivers? I've always checked yes when given the option to update older drivers. , |

Problem solved!
Apparently when I uninstalled my webcam, and then ran ms registry cleaner, I deleted the USB support from the windows registry. I did a restore from the regclean program and rebooted and that startup message is gone. Thanks for your help! |

Nice work!
I haven't seen that error in a while: it used to show up on Win95 systems that had the USB support uninstalled [whereas it's installed by default in Win98] . . . Enjoy your webcam! [I'm thinking of using one soon for web video calls so my kids can see their grandparents & they can see those smiling faces] . . . Gary |

Yea, that's what I couldn't understand..all the ms tech support referred to was Windows 95, but I figured it might be the same for W98, since I did just mess around with USB settings.
You might have thought the problem was with that old PB W95 that's been giving me fits (if you recognize the name). I still haven't got that thing revived yet. I think I might have a MB problem. Clicking, kb keys repeating, etc.but I've found someone close by that works on old pc's. I'm taking it to him soon. Have a nice day! |
