cannot open my comp , ie etc in win xp

hi statica,
there seems to be a new hot issue with win xp users . a user is not able to open any of the folders including my computer, control panel , internet explorer , recycle bin etc . we seem to have found a soln for that . if u uncheck "enable 3rd party browser extensions " under advanced in internet options , the issue resolves . but the question remains why this is happening ?any suggestions would be most appreciated .

rhitwick .

happy troubleshooting

Hi rhitwick

i had the same problem and now i can open the ie folder but i am facing a new problem now

when i reboot i tend to get the " blue screen " telling me that the driver irql not equal to or less than -- then it starts dumping the physical memory to the disk.

any suggestions to this problem ???

i am using a laptop, win 2000k, and a dlink wireless card to connect to the internet

regards
barry

rhitwick - you think this might be it?

barry: Your problem sounds like a bad driver, does it specify any particular file?

No, unchecking use 3rd party browser extensions fixed it.

barry: yep, that's a flaky driver.

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...d_stp_ottj.asp

if it JUST started happening after installing something, the driver you used for that device has a problem.

Yeah, I'd switch back to the old driver if it worked fine. If you don't do anything, you will have to keep dealing with the bluescreens.

okay i will do that and also send D link and email regarding this problem, hope they can solve the driver problem.

the blue screen seems to be part and parcel of all windows programs, so i will just have to live with it !!!

thanks for your help

Hi GLC,

Well i checked and it is not the DLINK driver.

i checked the event manager and it is always the following problem

The PMEMNT.SYS failed to start due to the following error : The system cannot find the file specified.

I checked and the file is there under under WINNT/system 32 and WINNT/system 32 / drivers

Any solution for this problem ??

regards
barry

The only hit I get on that relates to the installation of IBM Homepage Builder software. Time to look at software that you have installed now, instead of devices and device drivers.
