XP Upgrade Install

Can someone give me some files to look for to be able to tell if the XP Upgrade CD was used to upgrade an existing ME installation or if it was used for a clean install?
Customer's laptop modem has not worked since CompUSA did an upgrade for him.
It is a no-name generic laptop. I thought perhaps if the upgrade screwed it up that a clean install might set the modem up properly. I just got the laptop from him and he says that although diagnostics within XP says the modem is installed and working it will not work on AOL. Says something about can't initialize modem.
Thanks,
Alan

Send a message via MSN to QuickSilver
Update modem drivers? Just a guess. Whatever modem that is may need XP specific drivers.

thanks for replying but
did you actually read my post?
what i am trying to figure out is whether the driver is the original Millenium driver or if it was installed with a clean install of XP using the upgrade CD and a qualifying product.
can anyone help me with the name of a file which would have been only a millenium file that would still be on there if the install was an upgrade and not a clean install?
i know from reading other posts that many times an upgrade does not do the drivers correctly and it is hard to get the device working again even if you do upgrade the driver.
help please.
