XP Pro upgrade failed
Hi. Please help.
I tried to upgrade from Win2k Pro to XP Pro. ( I had two partitions in one hard drive) I recieved an error message and found solution in MS Knowledge Base article # 812247. Did # 1 & 2 in the solution suggested and got another error message: g:\I386\asms\60100\msft\windows\common\controls\controls.man File Creation Error - Error performing inpage operation. MSKB article #311755 provided the solution, however, I didn't want to mess around with the registry. So, I tried to reinstall anyway, (mistake I know) and got another error message. Frustrated, I decided to just reinstall my perfectly fine Win 2k pro and now I get an error message that says I don't have any hard drives. (I have two-30G each). My question is this: How can I get my computer to recognize my hard drives? I tried going into the BIOS and using auto, but that didn't work. Is there a way I can wipe my hard drives clean of the partially installed XP Pro, so I can load Win 2k again (after My PC recognizes my hard drives?) Thank you for any help you can provide. |

You will loose everything but you can totally reformat the drives. You can boot fron either windows installation disk and format from there..

Don't I need my computer to recognize my hard drives first? I tried to boot from my win2k disk and I get an error message that it doesn't detect any hard drives. They are obviously there and the connections are fine because it just worked and I didn't move the PC at all. There wasn't anything of importance on my PC, so I don't mind if everything is lost.
I built the computer myself (in a classroom setting 2.5 years ago), so I am familiar with what it looks like inside if I need to do anything in the box. It's just been a while since I have worked with it! Thanks again. |

What do you get when you boot up into OS setup? It should say the hard drives when you create a partition.

Yes, sorry I didn't follow the original post closely enough to realize what point you are at now.. Yes you will need to get the BIOS to recognize those harddrives, I would start by disconnecting the spare one and perhaps you may need to reset the BIOS either by setting defaults or using the clear cmos jumper. I'd say it's unlikely that both harddrives crapped out simultaneously so it sounds like you will be able to get them working again...

try what kendall says. Disconnect both and then connect and try one drive and reset CMOS and see if it works then.
