Windows 98 Problem

I have an old pc with windows 98 installed as the OS. When I start up the computer, it goes through the bios stage ok, however when the windows 98 picture comes up as its continuing to boot up, the pc amits a long continous beep and wont progress any further with start up.

Can someone please help as I am a bit of a PC novice.

Thankyou

Hello Braveheart,

A long continous beep usually means that your keyboard is bad. Try another keyboard.

What is the maker of your BIOS?

my 98 laptop was doin the same thing....i got tired of trying to figure sumthing out so i got a new comp altogether, but just recently i had a rather 'heated' conversation with HP and after sum figuring, I got the 98 disk off a friend and just restarted the computer entirely...it works now so thats my input

Will it start in Safe Mode? (Press F8 just before Windows starts to load to get the menu)

Did you try a different Keyboard? I've found that some of the more deluxe keyboards with hot buttons don't work well when setting up a fresh install or trying to troubleshoot a broken one. The function keys often times don't work which will not allow F8 to access Safe Mode. Try a plain jane, no frills keyboard and see if F8 will work.

If that doesn't work, you can always do an "over the top reinstall", assuming you have the 98 install CD. It won't disturb any of your existing files or programs. Here's how if you're interested:

other ways to get to safe mode:

hold down the Ctrl key during boot.

hold down the shift key while it boots. (found while trying the Ctrl key and realized I had the shift key, booted directly to safe mode, no "ok" button).

Try to create a "stuck key" error on boot by holding a key down while it boots, sometimes brings up an option screen. Try doing that with the "f8" or Ctrl or shift and see if you have any luck.

Don't give up on the keyboard theory just yet. I have been trying to do a clean install on an old PB W95 pc for weeks. Finally got set to go and had the same problem. I was told it could be the motherboard and was ready to haul it to the dump when I read your post just last night.

I tried five different keyboards and on the fifth one it finally booted up without the clicking and beeping! The setup started instantly and the whole format and install went on without another problem! I knew that old $1.00 yard sale keyboard would someday come in handy.
I hope that works for you too.
(I'm glad I read this forum even when things are going smoothe)
