sometimes win xp is slow in displaying conetnts of "my computer"

hey

when i go into "my computer" in win xp, most of the time the various drives show right up, quickly. occasionally, though, it takes a while & i get this little waving flashlight icon whle the system searches for the stuff. today, it was looking for 30 seconds or so. generally, when this occurs, it's the first time in a computing session when i try to view "my computer", but there are sessions where it never happens at all.

any idea why this happens, and so sporadically?

thanks!

If there's a disk in any of the optical drives, this is very common.
