has the customer done anything to the computer in order to clean it out, yet?

it sounds like the explorer shell may have been corrupted, and is only partially working. maybe stopping and manually restarting explorer.exe could help.

maybe you could try to uninstall all service packs and then reinstall sp4... or mayb uninstall the service packs and try a reinstall/upgrade of windows.

Sounds like something that is corrupted is being loaded in windows but not in safe mode. I don't think sfc would fix the prob but a repair install might/should. Good Luck!

So far, all I've done is talk to him on the phone, and this is what we have done:

Update and scan with AVG, nothing found.
Update and scan with Spybot, nothing unusual, just the usual tracking cookies and a Lycos BHO.
Restart to last known good configuration.
Yes, we tried ending the explorer.exe process and restarting it in Task Manager.

I'm planning on trying a repair and a sfc /scannow, just trying to avoid a full reinstall.
