Win2k pre sp4 needs a driver install to use usb 2.0. at 2.0 speeds; it will function at 1.1 speed without the 2.0 driver. I will look on the ms site. The driver used to be there. If you install win2k with sp4 slipstreamed, then the driver is installed for you. If you update to sp4 after you install, then you must install the driver yourself.

It kind of makes me mad that you must install the driver if you update to sp4; however if you slipstream the sp into the install, the driver is installed for you.

Slipstreaming is the process by which the service pack is integrated into the install files. After you install with a slipstreamed disk, you are already at the service pack level. I make custom install disks for both win2k and winxp with the service pack integrated.

The process of slipstreaming is not too difficult. First you download the full [not express] version of the service pack. You must extract the sp files either with a third party program such as winrar or by using this syntax W2KSP2.exe –x. After the files are extracted, copy your win2k cd to a folder such as C:\win2k. Open a command prompt and type c:\sp4\i386\update\update.exe /s:c:\win2k

Now the folder you copied your win2k cd to is slipstreamed. If you want to make a bootable cd for installs, you will need burning software such as nero.

Open nero [not nero express] and go to new>boot. You will need either a boot image or you can extract one from your win2k cd. Point nero at where the image resides. Enable expert settings and choose no emulation, change loaded sectors to 4. On the iso tab enable 31 character support. On the label tab put anything you want. Click open and drag the contents of the folder you copied win2k into [not the folder, however the contents of the folder] add anything else you want like drivers, any patches you need or utilities and click burn. You now have a custom win2k cd with sp4 and any other programs you put on it.
