Are you using a boot disk (floppy) to do fdisk and format c:\?

rerun the floppy based fdisk and delete all partitions before you create the primary again.
The error you have comes from having a filesystem type your format can't handle. This is also assuming that your boot disk is 98. |

So you want to wipe Win2K from your drive?
Are you using any drive overlay programs? If your fdisk doesn't work, you can try downloading a new boot disk from www.bootdisk.com. You must run fdisk first and delete all prior partitions and set up a new fat32 (with large drive support) partition. After that is all done, and you have set the partition to active, reboot and run "format C:" from the boot disk. After that is done, insert your 98 CD and install.

You may have trouble deleting your old NTFS (Win2K) partitions using the FDisk that comes with the Win98 CD. In that case, visit this page and download the small tool called delpart.exe, and use it to get rid of the old partitions.
Then boot to the Win98 CD, cd to the win98 folder and run FDisk to create new FAT32 partitions on the drive to install Windows 98.

FDISK should see the partition as unknown. If not, then just use the utility that Pillainp told you to use.

Download a utility from the Drive manufacturer to write zeros to the front of the drive.
This will get rid of any stupid data written in the beginning of the drive by NT or XP. I have done this before and it works. NT puts some kind of lock on the partition or something. Last edited by ceh4702; 04-06-2004 at 03:19 PM. |
