ReInstalling kills virus/trojans?????
Title says it all. If I resinstall my XP Pro, will my trojans and vruses be deleted.
I have a trojan or 2 in my system and its kicking my ass. Ive tried everything, and its still on there. What happens if I reinstall, will everything be AOK? Or should i just get a new hard drive and start from stratch. Then be smart and put some anti virus and anti trojan software on my system. Whats the best anti virus/trojan FREE software i can use? |

Yes, most virus if not all will be deleted if you do a fresh install of xp since xp will format your hard drive.
Are the virus/trojans that you are talking bout is the spoolsvc.exe as in this post http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=93823 |

Well, that's sort of the extreme way to get rid of viruses & trojans. I'd just use some scanners first, they should be able to get rid of 'em for you.
For a free virus scanner try AVG. CLICK HERE For a trojan/spyware scanner try Spybot Search & Destroy CLICK HERE

Well ok.
Have you tried running housecall or even downloading the AVG anti virus as the guys had recommended? |

Sure did, said I had a host of other virus and trojans, killed and quarentined them. WHen i run now, i says nothing is wrong. But my system is still the same. And i still see the Spoolsvc.exe thing. The only thing that has changed is that now i am able to get into the registry without it disappering. But the desktop still doesnt pop up and when i hit ctrl-alt-del, i still see the spoolsvc.exe in the running processes |

Go to Trend Micro and search for Sysclean. It's a simple COM file, download it into an empty folder. Then get the latest standard Trend pattern file and unzip it into the same folder. This is much better than Housecall because it can terminate running processes and unload them from memory and will clean that sucker right up. I've been more impressed with this manual removal tool than any online scan or standard AV package I've ever seen. It's time consuming but well worth it.

It can be found on the Trend webpage.
Here's the link. I believe you should download the lpt853.zip file. This is the latest file as of 7 Apr 04 http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp |

Don't forget to unzip the zip file, don't just drop it into the same folder as sysclean.com and expect it to run.

i wont
its funny-because the virus/trojan has blocked my machine from going to trendmicro and other antivirus sites. sophos, norton etc...... so i can see those sites from anyother machine, just not my main one. i have another machine in the back and i just moved a bunch of files from the sh!tty hard drive to the other one. (no trojans were bought over) Honestly i think i will just buy another hard drive and start from stratch. ITs my dumb fault, because i never had any anti virus software on my main system. im sick of dealing with this, ive followed everyones directions and its still teh same thing. got a hard drive for sale?

You don't need a new hard drive, you just need to reformat that one and reinstall your OS.

Don't forget with XP that your restore area can be infected. May be best to turn off Restore on all drives before you clean out any virii.

You could always just low level format the drive to really make sure you kill theese things. A reinstall/reformat wiill suffice though. Only need to low level format if you are paranoid.

Low level format in reference to an IDE drive means a zero fill. You can download the utility to do this from the hard drive manufacturer.

Just make sure the unzipped pattern file is in the same folder as sysclean.com, and double click on sysclean.com in windows explorer or my computer.

thanks glc,
many of my friends use Stinger from McAfee. Would this sysclean (kept updated) be preferable to Stinger in your opinion? alan |
