XP Pro on Pricewatch.com

I'll admit to being a bit of a Pricewatch troll but it's almost time to start buying my parts for my new PC build and I'm hoping to save as much money as possible on the OS. I definitely want to get XP Pro. I see the full install with CD for sale for as low as $120. It looks legit from what I can tell, but since we're dealing with Microsoft here, I'd prefer to be in as much compliance with them as possible. Is there any reason I wouldn't want to buy from some of these resellers?

I would be very, very wary of buying software from anyone but the fairly big companies. Especially since the price most distributors sell the OEM XP Pro to retailers is $139. The only way I could get a $120 price from my distributor would be to buy a ten-pack of them, which makes me suspicious of someone selling a non-OEM XP for $120 to retail customers.

Do you qualify as a college student with valid enrollment and ID #? If so, you can buy XP Pro Upgrade version at Newegg for $86. It's a full install CD but you'll need a legit copy of a previous OS to install it. They do ask for the id info at check out. Just got a copy a couple weeks ago for my daughter's new comp.

What do you mean it is the full CD, if you said it is just an upgrade.....or do you mean that as long as you have a key from a previous Windows, you can do a fresh install?

Right on the fresh install. I loaded it on a clean hard drive and when it didn't find a previously installed os, it asked me to insert a valid os cd. I showed it a 98se disk, removed it and continued with the installation.

So could I do this if I had an OEM key from a Dell Computer?

I would think so as long as you meet the purchase qualifications. My 98se CD is from my old retired Gateway. Check the qualifications at Newegg. Here:

I see it went up a buck since earlier today!

A key won't work. You need a CD with qualifying OS to insert when install ask for it. I do not believe a Dell recovery CD will work, but you need to check to be sure.
