Security Updat CD....

I sent away for this back in March, more out of curiosity then anything else, after I read about it on this forum.
Well it just arrived today and I got several surprises.
1. It's up to date. All patches through Feb. 2004.
2. It's got beta versions of the new the windows firewall and anti-virus software.
3. It has a tutorial that actually covers such things as open ports.
I don't have time just now to try it out but it's beginning to look as if M$ actually put some real effort into this thing.

edit: took another look at the av and firewall it's by a company called eTrust.
Anyone know about them ?

If it's Etrust then the firewalls is prolly Zone Alarm PRO. Also Etrust is Computer Associates and if it is like the free year subsciption that was availble a few months ago it is Zone Alarm PRO and the AV is pretty good.

Looks like the free offer is still good

The firewall is in fact Zone Alarm, but the antivirus isn't that good. It lets stuff through that AVG catches.

This new MS Security CD is pretty slick. Got mine yesterday and tried it in one of my XP Home machines. It told me everything is up to date. Today I assembled a new AMD toy to play with and loaded an older 98se os on it. When I inserted the Security Update CD and said 'install' it installed all the updates, restarted several times without touching the machine, included latest IE6, WMP9, and DX9. When it was finished I went to the Windows Update site and there were two critical upadates and 3 optional that I chose to install. Took a grand total of about 3 minutes to do it all! Very handy.

Mine came already also, and as stated above it looks like a good thing from MS and didn't even have to pay shipping!!

MS never released a newer disk because soon after this release they came out with SP2 for XP. Don't think they're interested in adding the IE6/Security updates for 98se/ME/2000. SP2 takes care of those for XP versions.
