Virtual memory error

Last night I was playing Rainbow six 3 on my pc when I got a virtual memory error and my system crashed. Upon rebooting my wisetech optical mouse was gone from the system. After several attempts at down loading drivers I bought a new mouse which works fine. My question is where can I find a program to control what items start up when I boot up.

My system is:
MB a7v8x
anthlon xp1800+
512 ram
VC Radeon 9000

thanks

You can unselect unnecessary start up programs by going to run/msconfig/start up tab. Check whether you should uncheck a program by referring here:

Thanks, I was able to free up the system a bit. One more question. On Windows task manager there are presently 32 items listed. Is there a site where one can determine what these items are and possibly limit them?

What type of items are you referring to in task manager? There are several tabs there: Applications, Processes, Performance, Networking, Users. Also, you may want to visit www.blackviper.com and follow his suggestions for disabling certain Services in Windows XP (assuming you are running XP).
Here's a quick link:

Personally, I don't mess with processes. The ones that are shown with a user name should be pretty much the same as the items in Start Up of msconfig. The ones that say System are assigned by XP and I don't mess with them. The Services rework I mentioned previously seems to free up some cpu/memory tho'. Try that first.

If you are running out of virtual memory, try setting it to 3x physical ram min and max. With 512 ram, set it to 1536.

Control panel, system, advanced, performance options, virtual memory, change.

glc thanks for the info. my VM settings were 768 maximum 1536. I changed it to 1536 max 2048 to see how this works.

Thanks

I'd recommend you set it to same size min and max to keep it from fragmenting.
