Icons Changing Back To Defaults
I have 3 icons on my desktop, My Computer, Recycle Bin, and My Documents. I have changed them to special icons and have renamed them. The problem is they won't stay that way, they will revert back to the default icons and names. Sometimes they will change back when I'm on line or it could also happen when I turn on the machine. Nothing consistent.
Thank You Bob H. |

I believe for the new icons to stay with you once you restart you must replace the old ones. You should be able to do this by renaming your new icon files to the standard names of the old ones (be sure to make backups of the old icons for later use). There are many programs that will do this for you through ether the way I described above or a different way. One of these is StyleXP which you should be able to find a link to if you go to www.themexp.org
Hope I could help!!!

These are the icons that appear when you customize your desktop. You right click your desktop and click on properties. Click on desktop and then click on customize desktop, there you will find the 3 icons I'm talking about. You then can change these icons. The problem is they will revert back to the default icons. It can revert back anytime, not necessarily booting up the machine.

Mine are the same way. I haven't found a fix yet. Maybe creating new icons would do the trick. I can try searching the registry but I'm a little uneasy about going that route.

Just a thought.(More like AWAG)
delete the iconcache.db file in c:\documents and settings\your name\local settings\application data (it's a hidden file, so you have to change windows to show hidden files) then change\save the icons in question then reboot. windows rebuilds the iconcache.db file if that don't work, try changing\saving first, then delete the iconcache.db file then reboot. not much good luck |

I can see that this should work, because my new icons are the default icons. The only part that I don't understand is, what causes them to revert to the default icons. It will do this even when you are already in Windows not at startup. |

I found a program that lets you change the names very easily
it is called XP_DesktopIconRename. It is simple and easy to use. |
