Question clean up garbage

A friend want's me to clean up all the garbage on his pc, as it has gotten very slow. The first thing I would do is dump all the temp internet files. What else should I do to help this process?

Send a message via AIM to juicelooser
Run Ad-aware and/or Spybot. That should speed things up.

As juicelooser said, spybot, ad-aware, uninstall uneccessary programs, clear cookies, and defrag.

are you familiar with the "misconfig" command in windows?
if yes then you know what to do, if not then you type in "msconfig" in the >start>run >command box and uncheck the programs that you do not want starting up with windows......at this point you should have a familiarity with the windows programs and make sure you know which ones you want to start up and which ones you do not....hope this helps

Yes, I use msconfig quite often. It does eliminate a lot of unwanted programs on startup. Thanks

Like tireman mentioned, make sure to run defrag.

Empty out c:\windows\temp too. Run scandisk before you defrag.
