98SE ADSL problem...

Win98 just updated to Win98SE (not before time) - I'm trying to setup an ADSL modem and after running the software it asks me to plug in the (USB) modem.
After plugging in the ADSL modem, I get a general protection fault from msgsrv32 related to setupx.dll.

I've reinstalled setupx.dll from a Win98SE CD and tried downloading another version from a .dll website with no luck.
I've also run System File Checker which found a fault with seupx.dll and replaced it from the CD again but still no joy.

Any bright ideas?

TIA

Does your adsl modem have ethernet capability?? If so I would get a NIC card for the PC and go that route...

I sure wish the UK broadband providers would stop shoving USB down their customer's throats as the only option. It's even dicey with Win2K/XP, much less 98/ME.

I Agree GLC - it's cheaper that's why they do it!

It's no cheaper if they require the customer to provide their own NIC - an ethernet modem is no more expensive than a USB modem - in fact, the providers here use dual ethernet/USB modems, use either.

magicdog - did you get the USB/DSL working?

Sometimes if the USB update in the Win98/fe/se is corrupted, it needs to be reinstalled. There's a download for that over at the Microsoft Downloads site.

[ . . . and, of course, when ISP's patch their software, that helps too --- you could see if their device/connection software has a newer version available for download . . . ]
. . . Gary
