Upgrading from Win98 to WinXP???

hi. I just recently bought WinXP for my comp. I have Win98 as of now. But many people tell me different things that I have to do to install it. They say I have to un-install win98 and some say I don't have too. Could somebody PLLLLEAASEEEE help me with this process of uprgrading. I don't know what I am doing when it comes to this. Thanx a lot.

Hello sideshow and welcome to PCmech.

You do not have to uninstall Win98. You can do an upgrade and it will keep all of your files and data intact. However, Win98 uses the FAT32 file system while XP uses NTFS. NTFS is a more secure secure file system than FAT32. If you install WinXP and convert to NTFS, you cannot go back to Win98 without doing a clean install of 98. You will find that most of members here will recommend that you do a clean install. That is, backup any important files and do a clean install of XP. That way, you won't have any unnecessary files, folders and pieces of programs that will only take up memory on the HDD. This will also help avoid any glitches with the upgrade process as some members here have reported having.

Hth and good luck!

I had WinME and originally bought the XP upgrade version and it did not go so well, so I ended up wiping out my HD and doing a clean install. As long as you have your win98 cdrom you do not have to have win98 installed on the harddrive to use the XP upgrade version. On my Mom's PC though I did xp upgrade from win98 along with new processor, and motherboard and all went well. I would give the upgrade a try and if it doesn't go well, wipe out and start fresh, and if you can save your documents and pictures and such than you should have a good go of it..
