Windows XP install problems

I'm installing XP Home on a computer im building for my brother to record music on. I got it to install up to the "reboot and keep the cd in the drive" and I get the "Setup will complete in approximately 34 minutes" and it just sits there for ever.

P4 2.8 processor
Western Digital SE Serial ATA hard drive
Abit Serial ATA compatable mobo
Sony DVD/CD-rw drive

I tried twice, reformatting the hard disk before the second attempted install.

Any ideas? Thanks

Is this a new HD?
If this isn't a defective HD, I believe it may be as simple as pressing F6 during the XP welcome screen to install 3rd party drivers. When that starts up you have to insert a floppy with your SATA drivers on it.

Good Luck, and welcome to the Mech.

Yes, I was able to get windows to read and write to the SATA hard drive by using the floppy driver. I solved that problem long I encountered this current problem. Thanks though. Any other ideas?

Whats the exact mobo?

Try here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;282195

What kind of RAM do you have? Sometimes bad RAM can cause this. Test it with Memtest86.

Is the CD scratched at all? Is it a legit copy?

If you strip everything down to the bare essentials, you may be able to narrow it down. Try putting in a know good HD to see if it still freezes. I would test out the RAM first.

Post back with detailed specs plz.

Never use Pirated Copies! They just cause headaches especially with service packs.

Nope, not pirated XP, paid for, genuine OEM version. Mobo is ABIT BE7-G. Memory is Crucial. I will test it and possibly swap with the memory in my working 2K box.

Oddly enough I installed a copy of 2K on it last night as I went to bed. That loaded no problem. Is XP just that picky?

"This behavior can occur if Legacy USB support is enabled in your computer's BIOS. This option does not need to be used on Windows XP-based computers."
