I've noticed on mypc, I can right click the folder and go to properties and can customize, and change the icon that way, but it will not give me the option with the default mymusic or mydocuments or mypictures folders, but all other folders that are there i can do what you are trying to do with the right click on the folder..I'm even trying to change mymusic from read only but it keeps changing it back to read only..

In Explorer right click on the folder, select "properties" and then the "Customize" tab. At the bottom is a "Change Icon" button with about a kazillion different icons to choose from.

Good luck!
