First Good Day With XPEEEEE

Migrating from my thread in Gen Discussion. Realizing I needed to install mobo drivers although doing a dual-boot with Win98se, I'm off to the races. Hesitated installing XP but latest gal friend has it and I wanted to be knowledgeable if'n she had problems. Thus far Bill Gates hasn't struck out from my monitor with his tongue and said "gotcha". Norton System Works 2004 (at $70) isn't causing crashes as in 98 so guess I'll send in my $30 rebate. Ain't figured out the "processes" yet when hitting ctrl-alt-del but will get comfy with time. Seems to be a bit more snappier than 98. I'm behind a Linksys router but will try my ZA Pro. Can't figure out where to turn on/off the built in firewall with XP.

Hey SARGE. Glad to hear you are liking XP.

To turn off the XP Firewall, go to: Control Panel > Network Connections. From there right click on your connection, choose Properties, go to the "Advanced" tab, and uncheck the box regarding the Internet Connection Firewall.

And good luck with XP .

Sarge I thought your were smarter than that, buying retail software. You can get Systen works 2003 pro oem for 10.99, http://www.directron.com/sys.html
I've found it to work better on XP than 2004.

Hey Sarge, try Black Viper's Xp Services 411 , pretty good site explaining all of XP's services.

How does Norton System Work 04 Cause more problems? The only thing I found of in the bundle that was useful was SpeedDisk Defrag, takes atleast 1 hour to complete for my system. The Web Utilities in NSW actually do a better job deleting web cache and history, don't trust the options in IE.

Andy, I've used Norton for many moons and still have it on several PCs. I've certainly had my share of problems but not sure it was the Norton. Thus far SystemWorks 2004 hasn't caused me any problems (except on Win98).

you may not experance the problems others have, don't worry about it for now.

I would suggest your picking up a good book on xp, it has so many new features to learn about, you'll be glad you did

i have 2 things i all ways do on a new xp install turn of the auto restart on errors and limit the size of the hard drive that system restore can use if you go to start control panel switch to classic view then click the system icon on the system properties box click advanced then the startup and recovery settings and remove the tick from auto restart on errors otherwise you can get a boot loop if you have a major problem. then back on the system properties window click the system restore tab and set it to 2or3gb because if it gets to big every thing slows down.
a good book is a grate idea and so is power toys
and remember the only stupid question is the one the goes unasked

Is it recommended to turn off all of XP's built in FireWall services? Such as crypography?

I know Black Viper says you should, but I don't play call of duty or drive my PC to the limit or anything like that. But sometimes I do get errors on some slower games and wondering if it was worth keeping XP built in Firewall services.

You talking to Sarge? If not I got my XP about 1 month and a half ago. I turned off most services I didn't need but was up in the air with those that described FW services.

No, I do have the option, but for the XP PC I seperate from the NAT router. It is not usually on anyway.

I may be a bit behind the times as far as XP goes but so are 62% of other Windows users. In other areas I'm unfortunately way ahead of many.

I may be a "bit behind the times" but I have a rock solid install of Win2K that gives me no problems and does everything I need to do without all the bloat of XPeeeee. I'm going to do what I always do - run it till it drops or I need an upgrade. I foresee that 2K will do what I need for another few years. I don't need my OS holding my hand whenever I try to do something.

Hi Sarge,
My input is don't fret too much! Ironically the only titanoc battle I ever had with Windows was with 98se. I eventually gave up and ME was installed.

Well relatively recently, like yourself, I've gone to XP pro (from Win2k)......and I have to say I've been delighted with it . Had a few niggles initially but thats to be expected.....

Personally I find XP pro runs really well on this PC (PIII 550, 512MB RAM) even though it now could be viewed as being a long in the tooth. Well this PC was the first home build I ever did (thanks to the guys here again for that ) and the reliability speaks for itself....it must be approaching five years + old now.

You take the plunge like a lot of others and see how it turns out....in my case the 95b to 98se plunge didn't but it seems that you're having a lot more success .

I can't remember when we last posted to each other on this site (my fault) but it's great to see ya still here SARGE!
