very very wide emails

Hello everyone. I am new to the site and i am not sure if i am posting my message in the right location or not, so let me know. My problem is my email text is very wide. Sometimes i have to scroll across the page 2 feet!!! to read a message. The size of the letters are normal, but a message that would normally take up about 4 lines will run in 1 wide line. My settings are the same as always. This started on my yahoo mail but is also on my MSN mail now.I have checked it on other computers to see if it was my pc and it happens at other pc's also at my addy's.Dell and MSN are clueless about the remedy.Everything they have tried including Reinstalling my operating system 2 times! and optimizing my Internet Explorer has not helped. Has anyone ever heard of this problem and what was the remedy? Thanks, John

It sounds like there may be a url or something in the message text. Sometimes (you'll notice this on message boards, especially) url's will be displayed continuously (no line breaks), causing the text window to stretch out to accomodate the entire length of the url on one line. Graphics files can also stretch out your displays.

One thing that might work is to try to set your email to receive emails as text files, rather than in HTML format. It's just a guess, but it might be something funky in a setting somewhere that is causing your problem.

Good luck!

I dont think you can switch to text only in yahoo mail. The only option I see is to block html images.

tireman, that is what i saw also. I forgot to mention that the inbox is also wide. This problem comes and goes, but is happening more now.Has anyone at this site ever heard of this??? Dell said it is a software problem, which of course is not covered under my warranty. I wanted to try other options before paying for something that i feel should be covered under warranty. john

I stand corrected... I was confused because I remember setting the option somewhere... must have been in Thunderbird.

The only thing I saw in Yahoo that you might check is under the Mail Options/General Preferences there is a setting for screen width when viewing plain text email.

Anyone think clearing the cookies might help? Could be worth a try.

Good luck!

Blue_Gundam2002, I am not up on different web browsers. I thought Internet Explorer was my only option. If i download Firefox,
1. does my pc convert right to it or will Int. Ex. conflict with it?
2 are there lots of adjustments to make?
3. what happens to my warranty with dell if i use another product?
4. Get the feeling that i am stepping into the unknown, but as i said i am pretty much a rookie at repairs.

1. It simply becomes available as an alternative browser. It gives you the choice whether to make it the system default browser or not. I have 5 browsers installed on this system - IE 5.01, Mozilla 1.6, Firefox 0.8, Opera 7.23, and Netscape 4.79.
2. Nope, it simply works, the preferences are easy to set.
3. Your software has no warranty anyway, this is a non-issue.

Glc, Thanks for the help..
1.So you just download it and set preferences?
2. It does not affect other progams on your pc?
3. Can i just delete it if i have problems with it?
4.Does it have lots of pop ups and ads?
Sorry for all the questions but they came into my head so i thought i would ask.

1. Download, install and run, just like any other app.
2. No.
3. Yes, but I don't think you'll have problems
4. No, Firefox blocks popups and ads.

Sounds to easy..lol dell always wants to Reinststall the operating system at the first sign of trouble. I have one more question for now.If my internet explorer has gone haywire, can't i just delete it and install it again or do they charge fo it?
Be back in awhile. I live in Pensacola and we are having a great beach day.Gotta get it now, since rain due tomorrow.

No, Internet Explorer is embedded in the operating system and cannot be uninstalled.

Dell wants to reinstall everything because their techs aren't paid to help you, they are paid to get you off the phone as fast as possible and they are not taught how to analyze a problem and come up with a good solution. Any idiot can run the recovery disk, you don't need a tech to tell you how to do that. You will get much better help with specific software issues right here.

Just out of curiosity, what screen resolution are you using? If it's 640x480, you are going to be doing a LOT of scrolling no matter what browser you use.

glc, i was happy with dell for resolving some of my problems in the past, but I tend to agree with your statement above now.
My resolution is 800 by 600.It does not go any lower. How is that setting? They changed it to a higher one while trying to fix the problem but it made all my icons real teeny and did not fix the problem if i remember correctly.

You need to set it higher, 1024 by 768 is what most web sites use. 800 by 600 makes things bigger so you would need to scroll more to see all the information. Just try 1024 by 768 for a couple days, you'll get used to it.

Does the text go to a different line at all? Or is all the text on one line? Are there spaces in between words or isitlikethis?

I will try to reset but the symbols and words are kind of small on my program page. Wonder why it has worked fine til now?
The text stays on one line unless they type alot..As i said earlier.. 4 normal lines of text would be 1 very wide line, and 8 lines of text would be 2 lines. The text is also normal with spaces, not all togetherlikethis. I have 2 yahoo accounts. Both have the wide text now and then and 1 of them is wide even when i go to the inbox. If i set the resolution higher, if it is going to work, it should do it as soon as i reset it correct?

Correct, and the way you describe your problem it sounds like your resolution is the problem.

Blue_Gundam2002, I changed the resolution to the next size and the text in the old mail is still wide. I also changed my view to the largest text size but that is too small for me to deal with when reading.

Blue_Gundam2002 and GLC
I just got around to installing Foxfire. It did not fix the problem. Still have very wide emails at my 2 yahoo addys and the inbox is still wide on one of them. Someone suggested that maybe the accounts themselves are corrupted and i may have to change addresses. Does this make sense?
any other suggestions?

Are you using large fonts? People with vision impairments often do this, and this can have some undesirable side effects. There are also adjustments in browsers for font sizes that will interact.

GLC.. No, normal size fonts. Remember this happens on other pc's that i log in on also. I don't know anything about adjustments for browsers, but should i be dealing with this at other computers?

When you refer to other peoples PC's are you on a network with them where it is loading this from your profile?

Fudtone, what i mean is I go to the library or college and it is still wide at these computers. That does not mean i am on a network with them does it?

What are you mail settings in Yahoo or MSN? How wide are your lines. With yahoo try setting it to 50 and check.

I think it must be in a personal profile, either at the sites your on or on the PC you are using.

I don't know if your school and library and or house are networked. A network that you log into often keeps your personal profile on a shared drive.

As Statica points out try the settings at the site you are on.

Statica/fudtone, I checked the settings of my viewing and composing text long ago. Tried various settings 55-72. Did not help thevery wide email problem.

When you drag the sides of the window in,(Hold left click and drag) does the text wrap into the new size, or does it remain the same?
