XP and FFXI Freezing Problems

Well just recently my friend installed Final Fantasy XI on my spare comp so that if he comes up here, he doesn't have to lug around his comp. The system is the 2nd rig in my signature... XP 1700, Radeon 9000 Pro, 512 MB RAM...

Well at random points in the game, the computer will either freeze, or the colors on the monitor will go into a rainbow effect looking thing, scattered colors everywhere, and you can kind of see whats going on in the game but its not as if its playable.

Any idea's on why it would do this? I did my best to look around on FFXI forums and saw people with similar problems but all they did was recommend a "Scan Files" or something like that for the program, which I did, and a defrag, which I also did.

I am going to update my drivers(4.3--->4.4), but would like idea's should this one fail. Could there be a V-Sync conflict and I would have to enable V-Sync? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
