customizing a new notebook

Does anyone know how to open a program with 2 clicks rather than one. My wife got a new notebook and instead of programs opening on double click they open on a single click. I could not figure out how to set this. I have been into the mouse properties section but can't find this option. Also in Windows Explorer she used to be able to see a thumbnail of only the highlighted file in the details view when she was using Windows Me but with Windows XP Home Edition she can't figure out how to get that one thumbnail only (neither can I) . If she chooses thumbnails view she sees all the thumbnails and this is not what she wants. Can anyone help me so I can help my wife. Thanks in advance.
