Setup freezes @ Device Install

Having problems with my daughters computer.

A few days ago she had an error message at bootup, NTLDR is missing, despite trying to repair windows 2K the error message remained, so I formatted the drive and tried to reinstal, I then got another message saying there were bad sectors on the drive. I have installed another hard drive, Maxtor, which was identical to the one taken out.
I now find although I can bootup I can only get as far as installing devices keyboard and mouse, about two thirds of the way through the computer freezes.
I have tried replacing the RAM and the cables to the drive. all to no avail, the mobo is AGP with Pentium 3.

Can anyone shed any light on this problem please.
Thanks.

Do you have any USB devices?

Try just running/installing with the bare minimum of parts. If it installs okay, then add each part one by one until you find the trouble part. Remember, after adding a part you may have to wait a day or two to see if anything acts up. Make it run hard before putting the next part in.
Good Luck!
