error code 0x80070002 and CANT enter safe mode

I came home and my computer had crashed and rebooted. It was stuck on the login screen and it was hung. I rebooted it and tried to log in and it gave me that error. I went on my laptop which I'm using right now to see what it meant and in the mean time tried to go into safe mode. I pressed F8, held F8, repeatedly pounded F8 but for some reason I could not get into safe mode. I've tried messing with the bios so that I boot from the cdrom and it does not recognize my windows xp cd. What the heck is going on here?

Ive looked at that. How do I get into reg editor when I cant even boot up under safe mode? I cant log in and I cant even get the Windows XP cd to work in it. If all else fails how do I just reformat and start over from the bios?

Whoops, nevermind.

Edit* So your laptop works fine, all these problems are with your desktop right?

Correct. I'm using my laptop right now and have been for a couple years now. My desktop was my first built computer that I did this past christmas. Never had much of a problem until recently it would reboot or shut down for no reason a couple times. Then this time it is royally screwed up. I cant even get it to recognize the Windows XP cd to repair or reinstall. I'm not sure what to do now because I can't even get into safe mode either.

So you can't get into BIOS: can you reset your CMOS?

Random reboots sounds like a power supply problem, swap for a known good one if possible.

CD-ROM should be setup to boot before HD, check that in your BIOS. If you can get in it.

Try F8 right before window starts and right after too, if not F8, try holding the left CTRL key down.

I can get into my bios. I can not get it to boot under safe mode by pressing and holding F8. I just tried the left CTRL key and it didnt work either. I set it to boot first under CDROM and it says Boot from CD:
then Press any key to boot from cdrom: . . . . .
then just boots normally and doesnt go to the cdrom

Sometimes I can log in without the error message but the only thing that shows up is the background. I hit control alt del and the little security box comes up with lock computer log off shut down change password task manager and cancel

I click task manager and the box goes away but the task manager does not show up.

Sounds like you might have to do a Repair install, or, b/c it sounds like the reg might be messed up too, you might have to do a complete reinstall.

I'm guessing you press the "any key" when it asks you to so that you can boot to the CD-ROM, right? I might say your keyboard is busted too if it didn't work in the CMOS setup, but it does and it did, right?

My keyboard works while doing things in the bio. Whats weird is that after a while of being off i can boot it up and log in but only the background shows up. A few times the Windows Blinds ad comes up(i am using destop x) but thats it. It doesnt move after that. I cant even use the windows xp cd to repair it or completely install because it just boots up normally even after chaning the bios to boot through my cdrom. is there a way to reformat compeltely just through the bios or something like that without getting logged in? I know it really sucks, especially since I have lots of things that I dont want to lose but I have no idea what else I can do.

Random successful boot ups still sounds like a possible Power Supply or Heat issue.

That being said, your CD-ROM might be broken too, since you can't access it.

If you have Fat32, you can try a Win98 boot disk to access your files, or I think there is a improved boot disk that reads ntfs partitions also. You'll have to search for that one. Worse comes to worse, you can slave the drive to another computer.

If you want to save your files, you are gonna have to strip your computer down and do some troubleshooting with known good parts. Try your CD-ROM first. Good Luck my friend.
