missing file install.exe???

i've just formatted a friends computer, put xp on it and put in a new cd drive into it (the old one had problems reading disks.) put the new one in today and it seems to be reading the cd's ok, but the computer is saying the file "install.exe" is missing. I'm not sure what this is, has something went wrong with the drive or the computer, or another xp problem??

thinking about doing a repair with xp (booting up from the cd yeah?) but was wondering if anyone had any ideas what is could be?

thanks

the computer still seems to be reading things better, but when i try to install something (currently trying to install microsoft office) a box appears titled "Windows Installer" saying it cannot read from the drive. Very confused by all this, as i say the drive is new. Does this suggest the wiring is not totally right? or is something more serious wrong with some other hardware? i'm quite new to all this so am a little confused what to do next. can anyone help?
