i recently agreed to formatt and install XP my friends pos IBM. it was so unstable, i was close to un-usable. its a "NetVista" type 2257.
heres some of the sad specs: Celeron 1.3 ghz\ mobo - old intel board fsb - 100 mhz ram - pc133, 256 mb video - onboard I formatted the drive, and now i need to install windows xp. I don't know how to get it to boot from the xp cd with this (intel) motherboard. Do i need to make a boot disk? if so, how do you make one for XP? any help would be great.

You don't need a boot disk. Just boot from the Windows XP CD and installation will start. You will then be able to partition and format the drive. After formatting, setup will continue.
I guess you used fdisk and format to format the drive. If you did so, delete the partitions as with Windows XP you want to use NTFS instead of FAT32, and FDISK and FORMAT don't support NTFS. So just do it again at the beginning of XP setup. If the PC doesn't boot from the CD, check the BIOS settings. The boot order should be set to boot from CDROM first, then the hard drive. Also set the devices to AUTO in IDE Setup, and use the first optical device if you have more. RJ

installing xp on a system that is already unstable is the wrong thing to do.
you need to correct the problem first. then when it running good, xp will also run good. if you try to install it on a system that has problems, you may end up with bigger problems. |

It's not old enough to not include the boot sequence. Even my old Pentium 133 can boot from CD. My old Pentium II 333 and III 800 systems and all equally old systems of my friends can boot from CD, too. So I'm sure yours can do as well
![]() What is the exact model number of that Intel board ? RJ |

Oh right, you told us it is a NetVista type 2257.
Under detailed specifications it says "Boot sequence control", so the PC should be able to do it. If I find a manual for download I'll take a look, as I have no idea how your bios looks like. My board has an extra "boot" menu item, my old one had "first boot device" and "second boot device" etc., and my very old one had "boot sequence". RJ |
