Unhappy Sound Drivers

Hi guys. I'm having trouble finding sound drivers for an IBM E Series 245 desktop with a SiS 530 chipset. Where can I find these? Thanks for any ideas.

. . . actually, I'm don't think that the SiS 530 chipset has an audio component. If there is onboard sound on that IBM, that part would have been up to whatever IBM chose to put on the motherboard in the design stage [the CMI (C-Media), and sometimes Creative SoundBlaster chips were fairly popular].

Check the back of your computer. If the this is a tower case, and the audio plugs are in a vertical row about a couple of inches below the ps/2 keyboard & mouse connectors, then it's onboard sound. If you see two sets of audio connectors, then you might have both onboard sound and an add-on PCI or ISA slot sound card. In this case, the onboard sound needs to be disabled in the Bios (& sometimes a jumper needs to be placed on the motherboard).

If you see a PCI card, with the computer shut down and powered off, take the sound card out & inspect it for markings. You might be able to identify it in this way. Then visit the IBM download website & search for the drivers.

There are also software utilities that attempt to list the hardware in your system by running various tests. BelArc Advisor gets a lot of recommendations - I don't have a link handy, but I know it's available over at download.com

Best of luck

It's definately onboard sound. I do have the driver pack for the SiS 530 chipset, but not for the onboard sound. This is an original comp, just the way IBM built it.

I think IBM puts a model # on the back sticker. See if you can find the exact model # --> that makes it easier to find the drivers on the IBM website. I believe it's one of the Aptiva series?

. . . I'm still betting on either C-Media [CMI] or ESS for the sound chip onboard. I'm not sure why, but the SoundBlaster onboard didn't seem to be as widely used (most likely a cost consideration).

Post as much of the model # string as you can find. There are many, many varieties of some model families. IBM is a pretty big company.

[by the way, if you can connect with that older machine to the internet, you can visit the IBM support webpages ---> there is a tool they can run online to detect the hardware in your system = that might be an easy first try]

ESS Solo-1

ES1938/ES1946(ES1969) is the one you want.
