notepad file saving problem

I got a call from a friend who has a strange problem. When he saves text written in notepad, the file is not "made".
There aren't any error messages, but when he tries to find the file, its nowhere to be found.
i've told him to see if hidden files were on, to try and save with another extention, but nothing helps. when he saves text from word or wordpad, it does work.

anyone got a clue what this could be?
He runs winXp ( i think pro) dutch version.

Very bizarre problem.

Are you guys sure he's not just saving it someplace wierd?

Did you try to search for *.txt files on his C: drive?

Creating a new text document directly on the desktop to see if that will work?

I know this is very basic stuff, but I am not sure what you may have tried as far as troubleshooting.

i only spoke to him on the phone so far and he doesnt have internet yet (that's why i'm posting it) . i told him to try and save the file as something else than .txt(like .abc or.123) and it worked properly.
So it seems like there's something wrong with txt file type or so.
I did tell him to do a search on *.txt files and the filename he gave it, but that didnt reveal anything. ill tell him to save a txt directly to desktop, see what that does. Maybe i can give him some free text editor on a diskette instead of notepad to see what that does.

Quite weird problem indeed. Guess ill have to go over there myself to see what's wrong .

Rather than trying to save a text file to the desktop, have him right-click on the desktop and select New>Text Document. This way the new file should instantly appear on the desktop as "New Text Document.txt".

It's a minor difference, I know, but it's a starting point if nothing else.
