Win2k....'No Updates Were Installed'

Hi,
This is a Win2k question obviously and it may have been answered before....but on searching for 'windows update' I found over 400 matches in this forum and found it rather daunting to search through all of them.

The problem is Windows Updates running Win2k and is work related.

We have some older Dell GX1 (small chassis) PC's which are PII and I was doing a master Ghost build on this particular GX1 for all the rest to be Ghosted from. Basically installing Win2K, SP4, O2K IE6 etc. This all went as usual and the PC was running fine with its' new OS (previously NT4).

At this point I must point out that this wasn't an upgrade to Win2K. It was a fresh install from scratch to Win2K SP4.

However the Windows Update....well it didn't! It told me there were 15 odd critical updates so I just let it go and download.

Total file size was just 20 odd megs which d/led in minutes but when it came to the install part the PC just sat there with the install bar around 50%.
There was no hard disk activity for ages.

So I cancelled, restarted the PC and deleted the 'wutemp' file and this time just selected ONE 400KB file from the fifteen odd available.......

Again it d/led in seconds but took an age to install given it's size......then a message appeared on the site with a big red 'X' saying 'No Updates Were Installed' and a link if I wanted to retry. I did on several occasions but the same scenario....ie: no updates were installed.

What started out as an everyday thing has now become a problem. I did try to a few fixes I found on Google in work like re-regstering four files (an ocx and a three dlls whose names escape me) and rebooted but no good either

I haven't seen this before. We have a lot of Dell & Fugitsu Siemens PC on site but we 'inherited' these Dells from another department which recently has come back under our wing.....they had split from us in 97 and we're currently in the progress of migrating them back to our network again so we've never had these Dell GX1 PCs before.

The PC itself runs fine during the stalled/failed update and it not slow given its' processor (350Mhz) but the updates fail. This is important as we use this feature of Win2K to keep the current users PC's up to date etc.

Am I missing something here as this doesn't happen with any of our other PCs and some are older than the Dell GX1 in question.

Sorry for the long post but any input here would be greatly appreciated. The guinea pig Dell is running fine apart from this most important of trick it must perform.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
