windows update software
cleaned up a system with spybot and adaware trying to regain functionality of the windows update. when i click check for updates i get a sound which sounds like the closing door wav of some sort and it does not proceed. what is the file name for the update software so perhaps i can delete and force windows update to download a new copy?
thanks alan ps customer fully expects a format and reinstall but i want to learn something with this system if possible. |

This idea won't help you with your current repair but for next time order up the FREE MS Security Update CD. It contains all updates for all the OS's from 98 on. Just pop it in and follow the instructions. It finds the proper updates for your OS and will run to conclusion, including restarts, completely unattended. I love it. Saves a bunch of time. After running the CD (mine goes thru Feb 2004), go to Windows Update and get the final few not on the disk. Here's a link to order:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp For your current problem, try this. Open IE, click Tools/Windows Update. Maybe you can connect that way and download the new update software. Last edited by Panama Red; 04-25-2004 at 11:23 PM. |

well panama,
i just kept on tinkering and you were right. that was not the problem this time. it was a pesky pop up swatter program. now about that free cd. they wanted a 10 digit bill to phone number number. do they charge shipping to that phone number or what? now.... i do remember in the past something about windows update not running and for that problem there was a file that could be deleted and update would prompt to download the file again when you went into update. wish i could find that information again. thanks, alan Last edited by tacoeater; 04-25-2004 at 11:27 PM. |
