Windows 2000/XP missing files
hi I have been using my system on and off for some time now. i recently opened the system after 6 months and hooked it up. and it was working fine till yesterday. yesterday, i got a error message saying "some files are modified with un known versions. I tried to fix this with windows 2000 pro CD. but it was asking for an other FIX CD from Microsoft.
Then I started upgrading it to XP pro. while doing this, it prompted me for a couple of missing files but continued with the installation. now the whole installation is finished. but i am getting an error saying something like "check the hard drives for the virus CHDSK /F ..." Is there any way, i can re format my system start fresh. I want to do this because, there were some problems with my CD writer. I tried to go to command prompt, but it is bringing me to the same blue screen with the error every time. Thanks for the help in advance ultra |

So you want to reformat the HDD and do a clean install of XP, right? Well, first go into BIOS, change boot order to CD-ROM first, exit saving changes and reboot with CD in the drive. Press any key to boot from CD and go with a new installation. Delete any partitions and reformat the HDD using the NTFS file system and you should be set.
Keep in mind that if you have an Upgrade of XP, it will ask you for a legit copy of the previous OS. Hth, e.n.

still getting the same error message
hi thanks for the reply..
I tried to reinstall with the changed order in BIOS. It was successful and I could use the XP for some time. but I got the same error message again and again 'some files are modified with unknown versions, insert the windows xp cd....' I did that, but it was doing nothing but repeating the error message. So i thouhgt it was because of Xp. So I reformated my system again and installed the 2000 pro . it worked fine until I got the same message. I tried to do exactly what the message says by inserting the 2000 Pro CD. but no change. now the system is not allowing me to logon and giving me the error message I could reinstall the 2000 pro, but why is this happening again and again? is it because Virus? Thanks Ultra |

You have formatted and it should get rid of any virus, but some viruses persist. You can get rid of those stubborn ones by doing a low level format using the HDD diagnostics software, ( ie, writing zeroes to the HDD). If it is a virus, this would get rid of it.
