Pissed CANT CLOSE WINDOWS IN INTERNET EXPLORER using XP

when i am browsing using explorer, i cannot close any window that is or has been opened by it, w/out using the task manager. and when i do close an explorer window by ending the program thru the task manager, it says that the program is not responding. i can browse perfectly and easily, but clicking the red "X" simply produces a tone, the border of the window flashes once, and the page remains open. im using XP home on a HP pavillion 4365 laptop. so, whats the fix?

I have a similiar problem, but in addition, my "start button" will not link to "My Computer", "My Pictures," etc. Also I cannot "right click" my start button to "explore" my computer files either. Have used Ad-Aware, Spybot and CWShredder and finally found a virus named "Joke Flipper" using "House Call" (antivirus.com) to scan by computer, but that was not the fix. I am still looking. I may have to format the computer. WolfpackRon.

Start in Safe Mode, go to Control Panel, Internet Options, Advanced. Uncheck "allow 3rd party browser extensions".

glc,
Sorry glc, but that did not solve my problem either. Any other suggestions? Thanks, WolfpackRon.

GLC,
After unchecking the above mentioned box, the problem did not appear to be fixed. However, the next day I updated the antivirus program, and tried to go to "My Computer" using the start button and it worked. I switched users and the other user did not work when trying to use the start button to open "My Computer." Not sure why, but my wife's account is working properly, so the problem is solved. Thanks, WolfpackRon.
