Just to be sure it's not virus/spyware related, do a full system scan for both. If you don't currently have either, for a quick online antivirus scan, you can try connecting to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and running that.

Free-for-personal-use versions are available:
Antivirus: AVG ---> http://www.grisoft.com
. . . . . . . Avast---> http://www.avast.com
AntiSpyWare: AdAware ---> http://www.lavasoft.de
. . . . . . . . . . .Search&Destroy ---> http://spybot.safer-networking.de

Even if you have another antivirus scanner active, it still might help to double-check with HouseCall.

If that doesn't clear it up, post again.

[Stimon is the "still image monitor" that helps communications between digital cameras, scanners, & multifunction devices and your computer . . . if the virus/spyware scans come up clean, and if the error is recent, you can use System Restore to a restore point prior to the error. If you've recently changed anything regarding a camera or scanner, you can try uninstalling/reinstalling that also]

[p.s. --here's an example of such an error caused by a virus http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=282997 . . . there are acutally many more like this, such as the Swen worms, etc.]

its been happening for ages.. and i've done numerous virus/spyware scans since it first occured.. and since it was so long ago i can't restore.. but i think i may have fixed it simply by replacing stimon.exe from the CD..[ however i can't be certain due to the random nature of it..]
i think replacing it may have also solved a problem i had with the my pictures folder aswell (?) as it seems to have stopped giving me errors

. . . I like that fix: nice and quick. Interesting that it affected your My Pictures folder much -- although that might've been the default destination for TWAIN imports. . . never a dull moment, looks like

Hopefully, the error messages spell that file kernel32.dll (any other spelling might indicate a virus). . . [still might want to run HouseCall just as a double-check]

Here are some Kernel32 troubleshooter threads from over at experts-exchange and aumha. http://www.experts-exchange.com/Oper..._20937952.html . . . http://aumha.org/win4/a/kernel32.htm

My favorite quick-fix tries are deleting/recreating the password file (.pwl), trying a different memory module, hard drive diagnostics, and over-the-top reinstalls. Each of those can be done about a half-hour. [to test the memory, you can try http://www.simmtester.com, & here's a guide for over the top http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846 ]

If there are lots of different programs getting the error each time, you probably will want to test the memory and hard drive
