I have a really strange problem. I have partitioned a new 80GB hard drive into partitions, making C: bootable, installing Windows 98SE onto D:\, installing Windows XP onto E:\ and I have three other partitions for programs and data. The problem I have is that my computer boots up all by itself when it is turned off. I have looked everywhere for an option where you can have it turn on itself but can't find anything. How can I stop this from happening and what is causing it in the first place? It's like I have ghosts in the house! I turn off my computer of a night, then when I come in in the morning, it has turned itself on!!!!! Please help and rid me of my ghost!

Check your bios settings for "wake on..." Several possibilities, such as keyboard, lan, usb, etc. Disable all of them and see if this corrects your problem. (If it works, maybe I'll change my name to The Ghostbuster, eh?)

Well, I checked the settings for the 'wake on' in the BIOS and there were two, AMPE and PME, both of which I disabled but it didn't make any difference! Last night I shut it down as normal and when I came out in the morning, it was all on again in XP!!!!! My ghost is still here! Any other ideas?????

Some motherboards have jumpers to enable start on mouse movement or keyboard action - might want to review your motherboard manual.

It is a brand new power supply, 400W which I have just recently installed. I will have a read of the manual, see what it says. It is still doing the same thing which is really annoying not to mention wasting power while it's on all night and day.

try disconnecting everthing except for the monitor and power cables while it's off and then seeing what it does overnight. If you really wanted to you could even take the monitor cable off too. also make sure that you have an uninterruptable surge protector or electrical connection and that the power hasn't been going out during the night. If that still doesnt work check your circuit breaker. Post back after you tested these ideas.

Yep, have done that but that just seems to create another problem for some reason. When I have turned off the power with the switch on the power supply, sure it prevents the computer from booting up, but when I switch the power back on and turn the machine on, the PC won't boot up at all, just sits there with a black screen, no hard drive working, no nothing. After fiddling with things and letting the power supply on for awhile, it eventually boots up again. Very strange machine. Am starting to think it has gremlins.

OK, will do. Can you tell me why the power supply is making the machine turn on by itself though? I am still curious to know why it happens.
