Unhappy Can't Install Win XP Critical Update....

A friend of mine tried to install a downloaded “critical update,“ Windows XP Service Pack 1 (Express version) from Microsoft to his IBM ThinkPad (running under Windows XP Prof., v. 2002).

When he tried to install the SP, he got a message saying: “Contact service administrator to obtain a valid key product to install.” He wasn’t able to install the SP. (He was logged on to a university computer network).

He purchased his used ThinkPad at a computer fair, from a registered vendor. It had the XP Prof. operating system installed, but the OS CDs weren’t included as part of the sale.

How will he be able to legally install that SP-1 update?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The only way to install SP1 legally is to get Windows XP legally. Since no CD was given, and SP1 refuses, it sounds like a pirated copy. SP1 refuses to install on a pirated copy.

So you gotta buy it. And then you won't need the SP1 because it's already included in today's Windows XP CDs.
