Actually the best way to do this is to reformat your harddrive, by running fdisk. This removes ALL information off of your HDD. You can then install WinXP from the CD's. From that point you just reinstall any software you want on your PC. Good Luck! thorlo6

No, fdisk does not format a hard drive, nor does it come with Windows XP.
But I agree that the best thing would be a reformat and a clean install. First backup your data if you have anything to backup. Then boot from the Windows XP CD once again. When you reach the point where you're asked where to intall Windows XP, delete the partitions, create new ones, format them and install Windows. RJ

I'm glad to see that you did create a thread about your issues, and I hope that you will benefit from brain power of the community than just PMing me and waiting for a response. I'd agree with RJ's method to clean it out after backup and start over. You could however try a simpler fix by editting your boot.ini Edit C:\boot.ini in notepad (just type start > RUN > C:\boot.ini) It might look something like this: Code:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect It doesnt appear that XP was installed twice and there is any redundancy - however, it is still always a better idea to start with a fresh install and get rid of the futility that came with Win98 |

Could you please paste the contents of boot.ini so that you get the correct answer.

timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect |

Remove the last line and save your file.
It should now read - [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect |
