Hi all,
Just finishing cleaning up that stupid trojan infection on my system that had placed a bogus key in the reg (see the powerprof.exe thread). While researching this problem I came across references to a certain entry that apparently should be listed under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and/or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices keys. Is there supposed to be an entry listed as LoadPowerProfile Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme in there? In a few articles on the Symantec site, they discussed replacing that entry in the reg after it had been tampered with by different virii. I did find such an entry, but it was under the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\DisabledRunKeys Does that mean that it should be running but is not, and was possibly disabled by the trojan? If so, how can I enable it? Or is it something that was probably just disabled to begin with and I should just leave alone? One page that I saw on Symantec said that the LoadPowerProfile value may not be present on all operating systems. I know this is confusing but I'm trying to get my system clean again and want everything that is supposed to be working to work. Thanks, Bill |

If I were you, I wouldn't mess too much with the registry - a single mistake can completely mess up your system...as you probably already know. I would go and use Adaware and Spybot Search & Destoy - they catch Trojans very well.
Hope that helps, kram

Someone pointed me to a MS Knowledge Base article that
seems to refer to this issue. I had upgraded to XP from ME a few years ago, and it apparently disabled the LoadPowerProfile feature. I guess if it was disabled by the system during the upgrade, it can't be terribly necessary, so it might be best to just leave it where it is. As for spyware and trojans, I run AdAware all the time, and TDS-3 for catching and killing trojans. Thanks for your help. |

The power profile is only needed for laptops to conserve battery life.
