I posted here a few months ago but no one was able to help so I thought I'd post again in case any new information has come up.
I'm having problems with USB devices. Basically I had everything working fine until I had to reinstall windows XP. My mp3 player should be recognised as an external drive, but instead it comes up with the found new hardware box and attempts to install it without any success. It does the same with my webcam. For some reason it recognises my digital camera as an external drive with no problems though. My webcam was working fine up until an hour ago. I moved my computer on top of my desk so I had to disconnect everything and then reconnect after I'd moved it. When I powered up it came up with the "found new hardware" for everything again and wouldnt install. But my digital camera still works fine. Someone managed to find a way around the mp3 player problem last time I posted. This was to turn off the computer, connect the device, turn back on the computer, go into the bios and change something in there. I think reset connectivity or osomething like that? This would work fine until I dosconnected the mp3 player. One thing I've thought of is to use the recovery disk tha came with my PC. It has a "repair windows" option which I could try, But I'm not sure if that will delete all my software too? Any help would be much appreciated. |

My motherboard came with USB drivers. If yours did you could try reinstalling them. Just a thought. Maybe update your chipset drivers too.
P.S.: My XP build does this with my PCI card and no matter how much I reinstall it just doesn't work, and this is after working fine for a year. I have to reinstall anyway so hopefully that fixes it for me. Good luck to ya.

You should not reinstall an operating system with USB devices connected - reinstall them after the fact using the exact sequence in the device documentation after you have all the Windows updates done and all applicable motherboard drivers installed.

OK, quick update. I did the Windows Repair and now my webcam is working again
![]() BUT. It now recognises the MP3 player AND installs it, but after 10 seconds the window freezes and I can't do anything until I unplug the device from the USB port. Any ideas why this might be happening? |

Take glc's advice, If you didn't have anything connected to it when you reinstalled, Then maybe try using the software(if any) that came with your stuff.

I doubt that was the problem. My MP3 player was not connected to the PC when I reformatted and installed Windows again.
Any other ideas? Thanks for your help.
