Win XP system f'ed

Hey, my family isn't very computer savvy and pretty much loaded it up with adware to the point where it's not running. It refuses to boot off of cd no matter how many times I play with the BIOS. I can't reformat it at all. I have no idea. Maybe, I am missing a technique that's fairly easy, but I have no clue what to do. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

hmm let's see it's an older emachines. intel celeron 900 mhz http://www.emachines.com/support/sup...prodName=T1090 has specs. The only thing that isn't from the original comp is a phillips cd burner. I was thinking that could be why it's not booting to cd. I don't even have the old cd-rom that came on it though.

Have you tried booting to SAFE mode and running Adaware and Spybot from there? Assuming you already have them on the system. If not, just go to SAFE mode, run msconfig/statup tab and unselect all the adware that's trying to start.

Yea it's not even about trying to remove the adware it's just a quest to reformat now that isn't really working. It's due time for a format it's never been formatted that I can remember.

do you have access to another pc? just yank the hard drive out and piggy-back it into another pc.....

believe or not the new McAffe 2004 6.0 is very effective tool here....

I did this just yesterday.....my brother is a firm believer that you don't have to run a fire-wall on DSL.....48 viruses later and a pc that refused to boot.....

I just put his pc on top of mine and run and IDE cable and power supply from my case to his hard drive......

Before you attemp this make sure you Anti-virus is the latest version (nortons not so good here)

when I booted my pc I kept the boot priority to my drive still....went to "my computer" right click on the drive you just installed and scanned for viruses....

sounds like work??? it is but....it worked flawlessly as his pc wouldn't even post after this it fired right up and ran like new......hope this helps......Terry

If you are wanting to do a clean install with a format/XP install you can use the boot disk that is located on the website below. It will allow you to Format or if the Harddisk was formatted with NTFS instead of FAT32 it has delpart on it which will allow you to delete NTFS partitions and then FDISK and Format in FAT32 which you need to install from this disk.
The instructions will be shown on the A:\Prompt screen. The bootdisk you want is the one at the bottom of the bootdisk list labeled "MS Windows XP System setup disk" The instructions are also printed on the page below it.

I also suggest that everybody who reads this post also download a copy of this bootdisk, in case you ever run into this problem (Which is not that uncommon) as it is much easier to use than the 5 disk set from MS. MS also does not like this bootdisk since it is used to install illegal copies of XP, so they have the tendicy to disappear. The disk also contains XXCOPY, DELPART, and Zerofill along with the normal disk tools.

Well, that disk is the ticket. However, when I get to the command prompt I figured I would make sure my win install would end up working before I blew everything out. I type D: to get to the D drive and it won't allow it. I am wondering if it is because the drive is not the original drive and a burner. That just doesn't make much sense to me though.

Could I have not installed the burner completely or something of the sort. I'm pretty sure when I had put this burner into this computer It went completely plug and play. Which was a surprise if I remember. And if I'm right and that's the problem does anybody have any idea on how to fix it?

On an eMachine hit the del key when the emachine screen appears when you turn on the computer. this gets you into the setup or bios screen.
arrow over to the right to choose boot.
arrow down to boot device priority
look at the list to see what boots first.
arrow down to the cdrom and hit the plus key (+) to move the cdrom up on the list.
then choose the removable device (floppy) position with the plus sign and then set the hard drive where you want it in the list the same way.
then you should be able to boot from your xp cd

Did you install the burner on the exact same IDE connector, jumpered identically to the old CD drive?
