WinXP Reboot? Is it a new virus?

I have had four people call me in the last 2 days to fixx their computer. They have WinXP and they turn it on and all it does is keep rebooting. You can not access safe mode, last good configuration, or even recovery console. I wouldn't have thought anything of it, but it is 4 computers in the last 2 days. Could this be a new virus? Anyone had any of the same problems? I thought that this was wierd that this many people at one time, who do not know each other and have no contact with each other, could have the same problem. Weird.

By the way, they had not made any configuration changes such as drivers or hardware. They had not installed SP2 either. Anybody with any ideas please post back.

It is the Sasser Worm, go to Symantec.com and download the removal tool and the removal instructions. It seems not to do any damage to the system files so all you need to do is turn off System Restore and run the tool while the computer is disconnected from the internet. Then you want to go to Windows Update and get the security patch and install it.

To stop the rebooting start>run type "shutdown -a" without quotes. It will stop the shutdown and allow you to fix the problem.

That's great if you can get to the start menu. As it is now as soon as you see the WinXP boot screen it restarts.

I have a neighbor that has Win XP Home and the pc will not boot into the desktop normally or to Safe-Mode.

Is this a case of reinstall?

This is a case of the strong recommendation to disable restart on error in 2K/XP's startup and shutdown options BEFORE this happens - then at least you can read the bluescreen to see what's going on instead of it just constantly rebooting.

Your best option now is a repair reinstall.

glc,

After looking around abit in both W2K and XP Pro, I'm having a problem finding the "Startup and Shutdown" options.
Where are they.?

Control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery.

2K is "reboot on error" and XP is "restart on error" I believe - uncheck them.
