slow win2kserver
hey everyone,
my windows 2000 server has been runnning very slow this past week or so. if i click on something, it normally takes about 5 minutes for the application to open. it's ridiculous. i've run all kinds of scans on it, and everything has come up clean. it's a mail server, so it picks up virus's all the time in e-mail scans, but it quarantines them and the virus definitions get updated daily, so it's current. it's very frustrating to work with, and there's a team of consultants coming in on wednesday to install a new scanning system, and they're going to have to use the server. it's a dual p3, 1.3 ghz server with 1 gb ram. i can supply any other info needed. thanks for any help.

Is it a member server or a DC? How much space is left on the hard drive? Have you recently patched it with the latest MS updates?

i run patch searches every week, so if one is available, i've got it.
it's a domain controller, with 3.5 gigs remaining on the main volume and only 160 mb's of ram are being used at the moment. |

baseline for the resources,
cpu usage ram usage activity swap file usage hard drive usage a baseline on these items can help locate bottel necks and unusal problem spots. for example if you find that your cpu usage has goon up to over 75% then you need to upgrade the ram. and there is other things it will point out. you would normally do one when everything is working fine, then another when it seems to be having a problem. compare the two and you can see where the problem is. does that help ? what you can do is to look at the performance and check all these items and also add a few more to wanch, doing this you would see what is useing the most of the resources and make the necessary adjustments to correct the slow down. what the heck, I am studying for the server+ exam and that is one of the trouble shooting theckniques I have learned.
