Please help ASAP

I am getting a problem and need help. This is what it says exactly.

Cannot find a device file that may be neede to run Windows or a Windows application.

The windows registry or system.ini file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purplose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or steup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this devidefile, try reinstalling that apllication to replace the missing file.

C:Progra~1\symantec\symevnt.386

What I did was uninstall this program, because I am fixing the laptop for someone and I am afraid that this will show up and who knows what will happen. What is a way to fix this?

go to add/remove programs and see if you have liveupdate for symantec and liveregistration. if you do you should remove them also. This might fix the error message too.

Symantec Event Library Files

SYMEVNT is a set of files, specifically, SYMEVNT.386, SYMEVNT1.DLL, and-
-on Windows 95--S32EVNT1.DLL, that report various system data to Symantec
Windows and Windows 95 utilities, including NU, NDW, pcAnywhere, Norton
Administrator for Networks (NAN), NAV and Norton Navigator.

If you're receiving version mismatch errors or error messages about missing
or damaged SYMEVNT files you should download these files. If one or more
Symantec applications is not running correctly, or if you're trying to
troubleshoot an apparent conflict between a Symantec product and another
application, you may want to try these files if they're newer than what is
presently on your system.

Run Regedit and browse to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shared DLLs

and also to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD

In both cases, look for a reference to SYMEVNT.sys and delete it.
