big trouble after partial defrag
i was defragging my hp notebook and part of the way through 3%, i wanted to pause defrag and do something really quick. when i paused the defrag, it became really slow so i tried to close defrag, when i did that, i couldnt really do anything, so i restarted, now it will not even boot to the blue welcome screen... i get an error message that says that "we are sorry for the inconvience, but windows did not start successfully. a recent hardware or software change might have caused this. then it has 5 optinons, safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good config, and start normally. none of which work, no matter which i choose, it will just sit there and not do anything. please help me!!

I've had that happen once before, and unfortunately, I had to do a zero fill on the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch. It was so corrupted that I couldn't do anything.
Try booting with the Windows CD and go into the repair console - and run chkdsk/r There is no need to pause defrag to work with 2K or XP - it will continue running in the background with no interference except some slowness - it's not like 9x/ME where it will keep restarting. Did you run chkdsk/r ?
Yep, that's exactly what happened to me. If there is data that you have to recover, you are going to have to remove the hard drive, put it in a notebook to IDE adapter, and install it in a desktop computer to try to access it and copy the files off. The drive is going to have to be zero filled before it can be reinstalled and reused. I learned my lesson - NEVER stop a defrag in 2K/XP once you start and ALWAYS run chkdsk/f first. |

I had a similar situation however I managed to survive it.
After pausing my defrag I noticed the PC was very slow and crunching at even a mouse movement at that point I gave it the 3 finger salute and stopped the service dfrag.exe (I believe that is the name) the crunching stopped but the PC was still very slow and I was able to reboot. On restart it took about 20 minute's of un-interrupted hard crunching (I was afraid to touch it) from there it worked smooth. I restarted the defrag and went to sleep until it was finished. I won't mess with defrag in 2k anymore.

This was on a customer's notebook - he's the one that stopped defrag and I had to clean up after it.
I use Diskeeper Pro on my 2K and have no problems whatsoever. |
