\ symbol

I am trying to re-install 98se for a friend and have just carried out the FORMAT C: command and now need to type MD C:\WIN98 BUT I can't get the \ symbol. It is an old PC with an old keyboard (if that makes any difference?).
How can i get the \ symbol? I know it should be Alt Gr + the \ key and on my XP character map it shows \ is equivalent to U+005C: but that doesn't seem to work either.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Craig.

You didn't need to use the \ symbol - you could have just done the following:

C: (enter)
MD WIN98 (enter)
