Installing new OS on a HP

I just received a PIII HP to give to my girlfriend. I was wondering if it is possible to install a new OS?

I want to completely format and install 98 again, but the 98 CD that I will be using is not the "HP Win 98 CD".

Is this possible?

If you have not used it to install the O/S on another machine, then it is legal to use.

The old PC went boom.

I know the legality of it, I was just wondering if HP has any specific "HP" stuff on it to not allow me to reinstall a different OS.
It has a few bugs and I want to wipe it all out.

you may run into a problem with drivers for the hardware in the hp, if you have the recover cd for the hp, you may be able to get them from there.

what is the O/S thats on the HP now ?

a lot of times when a system has a problem. installing the new O/S will not fix the problem,
as it may still be there.
find out for sure what the problem is first to varify weather or not the new O/S will fix it.

It has '98 now.

I was just trying to take the "easy" way out.

I might need to actually fix this problem then.
