Windows Task Manager

I have a question. Whenever I close out a program like netscape, or internet explorer it will not completely close out unless I go into task manager and highlight it and end process. It will close the program where it is not visible. Any ideas, suggestions please let me know.

Thanks

Can you clarify a little please? You said you close it down but it still runs in the background and you have to goto Task Manager to close it fully?

Well what I mean is, when you click on close to close the program it acts like it closes because you cannot see the program on the desktop but in actuality it does not because in task manager you can see the exe still loaded and I have to highlight it and click end process because if you don't you cannot reopen the program until it has been really closed. I hope this helps.

What program specifically? All programs or just IE & Netscape? When closed does your CPU usage still stay high?

Well so far just IE and Netscape. There might be on or 2 more but generally those 2. No the cpu usage is not all that high not anymore then 20%

Why do you use both browsers? j/c.

If you end IE and have nothing else running your CPU usage should be around 0-3%. Anything more and you have something else running.

I would get rid of netscape and update IE at Windows Update. But that's just me

Are you giving it time to completely close? I know when I close Opera it takes a few minutes to clear, because I have it set to dump cookies and cache on shutdown.

Netscape is pretty nasty - Mozilla or Firefox is a lot leaner.

Yes, I am giving it plenty of time. There are other programs, not just browsers. Also one thing I did also notice is and don't know if it has anything to do anything with it or not, but when I reboot the pc and is closing down applications before reboot it gets to rundll.exe and it will attempt to close it down and then stops and says something about end now or wait I have to click on end now before the computer will actually reboot. Don't know if that is part of the problem or just a coincidence.

From what I have read, I don't think there is a rundll.exe in XP. There is in 95/98/ME, but not NT machines. What OS do you have? I would check for viruses.

I am using WinXP. I have rundll32.exe
and I just looked in the windows task manager and at the present time, there are 2 instances of it running. Don't know why. I am not sure if that is why I am having problems with programs closing properly or not. I may try closing down at least one instance of it and see if that helps.

Check for viruses:

TrendMicro Housecall: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Update your virus scanner and scan your system. What scanner do you use now, if at all?

First, I did an end process on one of the rundll.exe and it seems to have solved the problem. But the big question is how did it start 2 instances? Second I use Norton and did a thorough scan this morning and was no viruses found. So maybe I have found the culprit.

You need to crosscheck Norton with Housecall.
