How to speed up gaming on XP Home?
I'm trying to boost my gaming performance for UT 2004 on XP Home. I've read about editing the services that xp uses but Im kind of leery of making changes to them. Is there anyway of setting up a backup of the service settings or better yet a way to switch it back and forth from gaming and normal use??
and if you know of any other ways to increase performance please let me know. No hardware ocin, strictly looking for software speedup thanks for any help |

Make two logins. One for gaming with everything shut off, and another for other use, with all the services running.

Go to www.blackviper.com and check out the Windows Services guide he has there. It is a very good guide for tweaking services while ensuring that you won't harm anything.

reboot: at www.blackviper.com it says that all service settings are global and they apply to all users
hope you're not using two users and expect the service configuration to be different.

I really hate windows. All I want to do is delete all the stupid programs that I'll never use and it won't let me. (messenger, outlook, moviemaker, etc.) Does anyone know how to get rid of these pesky varmits?

Think you'll find those are Windows Components. Go to the Add/Uninstall and click the side bar for Windows Components to remove them.

What I meant, was having a logon that ONLY has your game. Another that has all the other crap we use every day.
I know services are global. The other way (I do this) is to multi-boot two copies of XP on the same computer, one for games, one for everything else. To remove messenger etc, find a file called sysoc.inf in c:\windows\inf Edit it in notepad. Remove the word "hide" from all instances. Leave the comma's. Now everything will show up in add/remove Windows components, and can be uninstalled. |
