XP Pro boot problem
Computer boots up to XP screen that usually says "loading personal settings" but now it say something like "starting up" and hangs. I have been restoring it to a previous restore point almost every time and now that doesn't even work. Checked for viruses, etc. I thought it might have been some Microsoft patches because that is when it seemed to go haywire. I believe the patch dealing with DirectX may have triggered it? There are two versions or XP on two HDs Home and Pro with Pro being the one used. Could that be the problem?

Try running "dxdiag" and go through the different tests to see if anything fails as that tests directx. Come to think of it, it may not work properly if in safe mode but try anyway. You said, in regards to restoring, "now that doesn't even work" like it used to work but doesn't now. So none of your restore points are functional anymore? In safe mode try running a command prompt and typing in "sfc /all". I believe that is right, if not just try "sfc". Good Luck!

tried dxdiag
Ran the dxdiag tool in XP after getting a restore point to work and found some problems. I then updated to 9b version and then it restarted but hung on the "windows is starting up" screen. I went into safe mode again to see if was fixed and it appeared that it had but some of the tools couldn't work in safe mode. I'm trying to restore it again now. Any ideas?
