Strange CPU/MB problem

Recently my computer with an ECS K7S5A MB, xp2000 processor, 512 pc2100 ram, and XP Home refused to boot. I thought the processor had probably gone bad, as the cpu fan had had to be replaced and the processor had run hot for probably several hours. I installed an old Duron 600 I had laying around and the computer booted fine. I had also tried a 1.2 gz thunderbird and the comp refused to boot with it also. I cleared the cmos before each of these.
I ordered a new retail xp2000 processor, installed it after removing all power and the memory and resetting the cmos again. The computer still wouldn't boot. After resetting the cmos several times to make sure it had done so, I retried installing the Duron. Presto! It booted to windows fine.
I'm thinking either some part of the motherboard has failed, causing it not to support higher processors or maybe the power supply is going bad? All USB ports and everything else requiring power works fine.
Any suggestions before I have to go buy a new motherboard?
Thanks in advance.

Try flashing the bios to the newest version - that board is famous for bios issues and quality control problems.

Will try that. What makes me feel something has happened to the mb is that I ran an xp2000 cpu for several month, then suddenly it wouldn't.

Thanks.

just put the other cpu back in it so that it is running ok and flash the bios as per the instruction that come with it and then put the other cpu back in and it should perform fine if there is not any other problems.

I flashed the bios with the latest file from ECS, but it made no difference. Thanks anyway. BTW, it still runs fine with the Duron installed.
